Honors Courses

Honors English and Social Studies

Grades 9 and 10

To be considered for either honors English and/or Social Studies in Grade 9, students need to meet both of the following criteria:

1. Students must maintain a 92 percent average in 8th grade in English and/or Social Studies, and
2. Each candidate must submit a school-assigned non-fiction essay that will be scored using the NYS rubric. The student must achieve a 3 or above.
3. Attending school at least 170 days unless documented legal circumstances require additional absence.

Students not in Grade 9 honors classes will be eligible to enter honors English and/or Social Studies in Grade 10 by:

1. Maintaining an overall average 92 percent average in grade 9 English and/or Social Studies
2. Completing an essay scored with the NYS rubric and achieving a 3 or above.
3. Attending school at least 170 days unless documented legal circumstances require additional absence.
4.  To remain in Honors Classes, students must maintain an overall average of 90 percent for the year in the honors class.
